Mastopexia

The law of gravity coupled with the relaxation of the skin and other fixation structures exert their inexorable effects. The breasts, like any other organ, undergo modifications with the passage of time both in their function and in their form.

The causes of mammary ptosis may be due to excess weight of the gland, exaggerated sagging of the skin, or both. The estimation is done by the height of the areola-nipple complex with respect to the submammary furrow, so the ptosis is independent of the volume, being able to appear both in breasts of normal size as in small breasts.

Surgery for correction of mammary ptosis is called mastopexy. We can differentiate three types of surgical interventions depending on the group to which the breasts belong.

Group I:
Large or hypertrophic breasts. Ptosis is due to excess gland and/or adipose tissue and the operation is called reductive mammoplasty.

Group II:
The volume of the breasts is adequate but there is an excess of skin. For correction it will be necessary to remove the excess and reposition the gland so that the skin support fits the size of the breast in the appropriate position.

Group III:
It is the sagging breasts whose volume does not reach the normal size or the desired by the patient. When this happens it is necessary to resort to the placement of an implant to increase its volume. If sagging is important, it may be necessary to dry the excess skin.
